Position: Executive Director
Hours and Compensation: Part-time at 32 hours a week: Annual salary $50,000

The Marcy-Holmes Neighborhood Association (MHNA) seeks a dynamic and experienced
executive director to work with the Board of Directors to improve and engage the

Marcy-Holmes, known as “Minneapolis’ first neighborhood,” is home to 15,149 people
according to the United States 2020 Census and five historic districts. The neighborhood
borders the Mississippi River to the south and the University of Minnesota to the east. In
fact, many students call Marcy-Holmes home.

Marcy-Holmes is filled with beautiful parks and trails, particularly along the river. Historic
Saint Anthony Main, the Stone Arch Bridge, Dinkytown, and the University of Minnesota
attract visitors and students from around the state and beyond. Other landmarks include
the First Congregational Church, B. O. Cutter House, the Sixth Avenue Gateway, and Florence

MHNA works to build an inclusive neighborhood by engaging renters, homeowners,
students, the unhoused, and other populations in neighborhood improvements while
preserving its historic roots.

Executive Director Job Responsibilities:

Administrative Functions:

● Financial and Risk Management: coordinate with the bookkeeper, pay bills, track
invoices, review reports, manage contracts, draft budgets, review insurance, file
annual reports with the IRS, MN Revenue, and the Secretary of State.
● Fundraising: write grants, manage existing grant deliverables and reporting,
encourage individual giving, and seek creative ways to diversify the organization’s
funding sources.
● Community Correspondence: monitor and respond to emails, voicemail, and print
mail. Send communications as needed.
● Filing and Data Management: establish and maintain systems for record keeping.
● Board and Committee Support: attend meetings, prepare agendas and supporting
materials, post notices and minutes, manage correspondence, plan new member
orientation, track elections, coordinate and recruit volunteers, etc. Current
committees include Infrastructure, Executive, Land Use, and Creative Placemaking.
● Staff Support: delegate tasks and support staff in their work, providing mentorship
and guidance.
● Policies: draft and follow organizational policies, seeking feedback and input from
the board and other stakeholders.

Community Engagement Functions:

● Communications: write and publish an electronic newsletter, maintain presence on
social media, print and deliver flyers, maintain the website, and utilize other creative
communications tools to keep people informed.
● Partnerships: build partnerships with developers, alliances, neighborhood interest
groups, landowners, parks, and other neighborhood groups to leverage our limited
resources and keep Marcy-Holmes residents informed and connected.
● Equitable Engagement: oversee MHNA’s Renter and Student Engagement
Programs, manage the equitable engagement contract with the City of Minneapolis,
and foster an inclusive organization.
● Programming: work with the board of directors, volunteers, and students to create
and maintain community-based programming. Examples may include community
garden coordination, litter pick up days, organics recycling in multi-unit buildings,

Necessary Skills:

● Work with a diverse group of people with empathy, keeping in mind the
neighborhood’s goals.
● Organized and flexible approach to work and working with others.
● Work some flexible hours including evenings and weekends as needed.
● Knowledgeable about nonprofit organizations, community organizing, and
Minneapolis neighborhood organizations or a willingness to learn.
● Write and speak effectively, including the facilitation of public presentations and
● Drive to build lasting relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders.
● Build and sustain an inclusive culture and environment within the organization and
the neighborhood.
● Education in communications, public policy, finance, management or an equivalent
of three years of experience in management, neighborhood organizations,
nonprofits, or similar work.
